Welcome

Dear colleagues and friends,

This year the ACPET National Conference and Asia Pacific International Education Forum marks 25 years of ACPET’s formation, which is a very significant milestone. It marks a quarter of a century of achievements and sends a signal that we will have to thoroughly review what we have been doing as we prepare for continued growth and change in tertiary education. I am proud to be a part of this organisation at such an important time.

The sector has grown and flourished over this period and it is remarkable to sit back and reflect upon the struggles for recognition in the earlier years in comparison to the thriving and matured industry we know today.

  • In 2005 the Commonwealth Government reported educational activity for 31 non-university providers – currently there are 123 non-university providers registered with TEQSA.
  • In 1992 the Commonwealth Government data identified that there were 40 privately owned VET providers registered in Australia. In 2012 there were 3,821.
  • In 2017 there are 4,602 Registered Training Organisations (public and private) registered with ASQA.
  • According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics higher education experienced a rapid growth of overseas students studying in Australia between 1994 -2000 with around 73,000 students engaging in a higher education qualification by 2000. The number of students enrolled in VET courses for the same period rapidly grew from 19,500 -30,800.
  • Today, International education supports more than 130,700 Australian jobs, is a significant contributor to the Country’s economy as a $21.8 Billion exporting industry and adds great cultural value to the sustainability of social living standards across Australia.

Annually, ACPET National Conference and Asia Pacific International Education Forum, brings together 400 members in Higher Education, Vocational Education, English language and foundation courses. The challenges facing Australian educators have never been bigger. Australia has a great domestic system and is high on world rankings as a destination for international students. We can’t be complacent about these things and have to be thinking ahead about how we remain an international standard bearer for education. The conference will provide, for many attendees, a quiet relaxed time in the sub tropics in the middle of winter! We will be hosting the conference on the banks of the Brisbane river, nestled in the lively South Bank precinct at the world class Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

I believe, that aside from the opportunity to hear from some incredible speakers the best parts of such events is always the more socially focused events and experiences that offer a fabulous chance to mingle with educational professionals and guests in a collegiate environment. This year we will be hosting a welcome reception within the South Bank precinct and the annual dinner as always will be a highlight of the three days.

Finally, 2017 marks a significant 25 year milestone for ACPET and past Chairs, CEOs and Life Members have been invited to join us so we can collectively acknowledge their personal contributions and commitment to the sector. The opportunity will not be missed to reflect on how the association has evolved in this time and the challenges it has met along the way. More importantly, we will discuss and debate how the future must be shaped to support our students and their learning aspirations.

To that end, I believe this is the most important conference we will have in our 25 years. We need all of our ‘thinkers’ there to be part of a really creative debate about the future.

The time is right for major change and the Board will work hard to ensure all voices are heard in shaping the future.

I look forward to beginning the next quarter century of our Association’s contribution.
